HKI Programs in Burkina Faso:

History of Helen Keller International in Tanzania

Started working in Burkina Faso in 1988 and had a country office there for six years. Technical assistance continued throughout the 1990s and this eventually led to the reopening of the country office in 1999. Currently HKI Burkina Faso works in onchocerciasis control (Mectizan distribution and Information, Education and Communication strategies), trachoma control (SAFE strategy, with school health education) , nutrition (Vitamin A distribution, home gardening and nutritional education) and a curriculum developpement project.
HKI has been working in onchocerciasis control in Burkina Faso for the past eight years. The major focus of this project is establishing skills in Information, Education and Communication (IEC) techniques within the national primary health care structure and developing IEC materials. This included the training of trainers and development of training modules for all levels, reference books for the distributors, and video's. In Burkina Faso, pockets of onchocerciasis remain in the south of the country. Mectizan® is distributed in these pockets. The major oncho intervention site where HKI is working is the Health Region of Gaoua.
In January 2003 with the introduction of the Global Elimination of Lymphatic Filariasis project in the Health Region of Gaoua, where HKI has been working over the past years, HKIBF integrated the onchocerciasis and LF programme, since both are using Mectizan®, with an addition of albendazole for the LF programme and the delivery strategies are similar.

La stratégie IEC adoptée

HKI intervient, depuis 1995 , intervient en IEC sur l'onchocercose à travers des projets triennaux de " renforcement des activités IEC pour le maintient des acquis de l'OCP " . Depuis cette date, une démarche décentralisée a été adoptée en mettant l'accent sur le renforcement les niveaux district sanitaire et périphérique du système sanitaire national. Ainsi après la réalisation d'une enquête Connaissances Attitudes et Pratiques (CAP), des messages ont été conçus et des supports adaptés produits (pagivolte) en quantité suffisante et mis à la disposition des utilisateurs. Des formations en cascades ont précédé la mise en œuvre des activités IEC. La sensibilisation est essentiellement focalisée sur la composante " connaissance de la maladie ", " adhésion au traitement ", " la minimisation des effets secondaires suites à la prise des produits " et enfin l'appropriation des activités de lutte par la communauté.
